Follow-up on Proposed Changes to American Community Survey (ACS)
Were you one of the over 12,000 people who let the US Census Bureau know their proposed changes would harm people with disabilities? If so, thank you! The efforts of the disability community made it clear that the changes would have resulted in an inaccurate picture of disability in America.
The changes are on hold and the Bureau will retain the existing disability questions for this census year. We shall see how the feedback is incorporated into future proposals. For a good breakdown of the impacts of the proposed changes and feedback from the field, read An Opportunity for the Census Bureau to More Accurately Estimate the Disabled Population in the US from our partners at the Urban Institute. We will continue to provide ongoing information on this vital topic as it becomes available.

Survey of Young People with Visual Impairment in Rural Communities
Empowering Youth with Visual Impairment is a new federally funded project through the Department of Education. It is focused on improving education and employment outcomes for transition-aged students with visual impairments. This program provides virtual supports to students, their families, and the professionals who serve them. They are asking young adults with visual impairments to complete a survey to share about their high school experiences and how they were prepared for adulthood. The information shared will directly inform resources and supports that will be developed to benefit other transition-age youth and young adults with visual impairment. The survey takes around 20 minutes to complete. To participate, you must: - live in the U.S.,
- be blind or have a visual impairment,*
- have graduated from or exited a high school or transition program, and
- be 18-25 years old.
*You can also have any additional disability.
Please consider completing the survey if you meet the inclusion criteria and/or sharing with friends or loved ones with visual impairment who may be interested! For questions, email the EMPOWER team.
